Welcome to our family blog, describing our amateur (but enthusiastic) attempts at a taste of the ‘Good Life’ from our Wiltshire town garden. It is the family project of ‘Head Gardeners’ John and Sue and our seven year old daughter and six month old son.
We moved to our Wiltshire home about three years ago, swapping our two bedroom semi detached bungalow, in Bristol, for a town house with a large garden (in need of a serious makeover). We spent the first two years growing a modest selection of vegetables, slowly building a number of large raised beds from scaffolding boards (3.9m x 1.2m). We filled these with a mixture of reclaimed topsoil, compost and manure, to avoid the struggles we were having with the very heavy clay soil.
We now have ten raised beds and a very useful greenhouse, with some smaller raised beds inside and out. After a few years slowly improving the garden, we are really hoping that 2009 is the year that our ambitions of growing and eating lots of fresh vegetables really takes off. Oh, and we’ve decided to get some hens !
We’re not sure if people will actually read this blog, but hope that keeping the diary will help motivate us, focus our ideas and introduce us to new friends and gardening experts. Please feel free to leave comments, link to your blogs or just say hi. We are always happy to receive useful tips and advice.
